Cold and perfectly refreshing – Sangria
PREP: 10 MINUTES
REFRIGERATE: 4 hours or overnight
Sangria is a delicious wine-based alcoholic drink with origins in Spain. There is no hard and fast recipe for Sangria as recipes tend to vary from region to region, we suggest making this to suit your tastes. The resulting Sangria is served cold and is perfectly refreshing on a hot summers day.
- 1 x bottle of medium-bodied, dry, red wine * (see notes below)
- ½ cup brandy
- ½ cup of orange flavoured liquor or orange juice
- 2 – 3 cups of chilled sparkling water
- 2 cups cut fruit** (see notes below)
- Roughly chop fruit into 2cm cubes , taking care to remove any pips. We used 1 punnet strawberries, 2 oranges, 1 lemon. Put the chopped fruit into a large jug. The Wilkie Brothers 1.5L Blair jug is perfect
- Pour in the brandy and orange juice / orange-flavoured liquor. Add the red wine and gently stir to mix. Pop the jug into the fridge for four hours, or overnight.
- When chilled, top with sparkling water and serve immediately.
Note:
*Pinot Noir, Grenache, Merlot, Malbec, Roija and Temperanillo are good to use for Sangria, as they tend to deep and fruity.
**Most fruits work well in Sangria; apple, pineapple, pear. We have chosen strawberries, orange and lemon, we love the contrasting flavours and bright colours they add.
